HAPPY BIRTHDAY small

World Wetlands Day 1

The 2nd February annually is National Wetlands Day. The theme for this year is Wet-lands and Water Management. The key objective this year is to raise people’s awareness of the inter-dependence between water and wet-lands, to highlight ways... that water can be better shared between groups and to understand that without wetlands there will be no water.

On Saturday 2nd February we will be holding our “Gathering of Geese” event, a celebration of the Brent Goose, one of Tralee Bay’s most iconic birds.  Led by Gerry Murphy of the Irish Brent Goose Research Group, this will take the form of a presentation in the centre at 12.30pm, followed by a field trip out to the bay itself to view the birds in their natural habitat.

On Sunday 3rd February, David McCormick, centre ecologist, will give a presentation on the importance of wetlands to water conservation and management at 2pm in the interpretive centre. This is suitable for all the family and will be followed by a children activities workshop. Outside of the above events, our normal tour of the wetland and interpretive centre along with the viewing tower will be running as normal, so there will be something for everyone to take part in and enjoy.

The above events are included in normal admission prices, the above events are free of charge to members and seasonal ticket holders. To attend the special events only prices are €3 per Adult, €1 per child. We would like to encourage people to pre register as there is a limited number of places available for each event and as to avoid disappointment on the day.

The Rose of Tralee Festival Air Display wowed crowds at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre on August 19th.  Thousands of spectators turned up to watch the low flying aircrafts do their loops, spins and rolls and put on a fantastic show.  The Irish Coast Guard, who retired their 34-year-old Sikorsky S61N helicopter in July 2012, displayed their shining new Sikorsky S92. The Irish Air Corps had their Casa CN-235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

The show opened with the red Gnat Jet, these beauties are the aircraft that the world renowned "Red Arrows" use for their air shows.  It was a breathtaking experience watching these aircraft at such close range.  Coast Guard HelicopterAircraftGnat JetGarda Helicopter coming in for landing
